quartz Crystals
Crystals are used to provide a very stable frequency reference in oscillators or as a resonator in a very narrow bandwidth filter.
OSCILLATORS
A crystal controlled oscillator or clock oscillator is an oscillator which produces a stable square-wave output used to time or “clock” digital logic.
vCXO
A VCXO (voltage controlled crystal oscillator) is similar to a clock oscillator except that the frequency of a VCXO may be varied by changing a control voltage on Pin 1
TCXO & VCTCXO
TCXO (temperature compensated crystal oscillator) is a crystal controlled oscillator which has additional circuitry to compensate for the normal frequency/ temperature characteristic of a crystal. This compensation minimizes frequency variation due to temperature.
OCXO
This type of oscillator achieves the highest frequency stability possible with a crystal. They are typically used to control the frequency of radio transmitters, cellular base stations, military communications equipment, and for precision frequency measurement.
VCO
This is a non-crystal based oscillator which provides much higher frequencies up to the GHz range whose output frequency can be changed by applying a voltage to its control port or tuning port.
SAW FILTERS & RESONATORS
A filter depending on the propagation of surface acoustic waves through a resonant structure mounted on a piezoelectric material. Advantages include highly predictable and stable performance and very sharp cut-off characteristics; insertion loss is higher than for conventional filters, but amplification can compensate for this.
CRYSTAL FILTERS
A highly selective form of quartz crystal used in electronics systems and in intermediate-frequency amplifiers of communication receivers to improve the selectivity.
